Just taking one area at random, those energy bills that drop on the mat every month or so - the gas and the electricity. What can you do to cut down on this stuff?
Several things spring to mind immediately. For example:
- most of these companies offer a discount if you pay by direct debit
- if you take both gas and electricity from the same supplier, you will often receive a further discount
- Switch to a cheaper supplier with U-Switch
- to save on power, you could think about installing insulation and/or double glazing
- use energy saving light bulbs
- plug gaps round doors and at the letter box with draft excluder
These are just a few of the many ways you can save money on household bills.
Other money saving ideas:
- you can save a lot of money if you buy good quality replicas instead of the real thing
- check the label when buying clothes to make sure they are washable, to save on dry cleaning bills
- it's cheaper to cook your own food instead of going to the takeaway
- use leftovers to make new recipes instead of throwing them away, so your household budget goes further
- join the library, and order books you want to read there, so that you don't have to buy them
- put on a jumper instead of turning on the heating (not in the coldest weather - no need to risk hypothermia!) - this will save you a lot of money
- if you have cable or satellite, go for a cheaper package, or swap over to Freeview
- if you smoke, try to give up - if you can't, at least change to a cheaper brand
- walk to work if it's close enough, this will save both on gym fees and fuel or fare costs
- if your telephone call charges are high, consider swapping to a package with free calls for a fixed price
Though none of these will save a great deal individually, they will add up and make your budget go much further. And thinking up new ways to save money can be fun, if you approach it in the right frame of mind.
